blanket (textileworking: weaving)

Blanket, pua kumbu, formed by sewing together 2 warp-faced tabby-woven cotton textile panels along the selvedges. Each is decorated with an ikat panel in dark brown and cream on a red ground. This contains repeating curvilinear designs which may be abstracted from vegetal forms. On the shorter sides this is bordered by a band of six large motifs with a row of curls spouting from the top in the same colours. A band of blue and white chevrons between two narrow rows in white has been twined across the weft towards the end.The longer sides are bordered with a band of ikat between narrow stripes in blue and white, outside which is a wider cream stripe. The colours were probably achieved using natural dyes. The ends of the warp have been cut leaving a very short fringe.
