The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a charitable company, limited by guarantee.
It is also a Non-Departmental Public Body of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). This means that although it receives a large part of its funding in the form of Grant in Aid from DCMS, it operates at “arms length” from central government.
We produce regular Corporate Plans to guide our activities over the coming years. The most recent covers the period from 2021-2023.

Annual Report and Financial Statements
The Report and Consolidated Financial Statements for the year ended 31 March 2020 includes the Trustees’ Report and financial details on activities within the Museum and Gardens during 2019-2020.

Climate and Ecology Manifesto
In July 2019 we declared a climate and ecological emergency. In January 2020 we announced our Climate and Ecology Manifesto, which outlines our platform for action and the steps the Horniman will take to mitigate against the climate and ecological emergency, and to help shape a positive future for generations to come.

The objective of our fundraising activity is to support the Horniman’s mission and our work by active and effective raising of funds, whilst ensuring a commitment to our values and protecting the integrity and reputation of the Horniman at all times.
Health and Safety Policy
The Horniman Trustees, management and staff provide a safe and healthy environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, contractors and everyone else who may come onto the Museum, Gardens and stores.
Human Remains Policy
This policy outlines the approach of the Horniman to the care, preservation, management and development of the human remains in the collection of the Horniman.
It covers the display of human remains to the public, access to the Horniman collection for research and other purposes, and how requests for the return of human remains to countries or communities of origin will be addressed and managed by the Horniman.
The Horniman’s Publication Scheme sets out details of how the Horniman makes information about itself available to the public.
Restitution and Repatriation Policy
In autumn 2020, the Horniman held a consultation with members of the UK’s Nigerian diaspora community on the museum’s collection of objects from Benin City, as part of its wider project ‘Rethinking Relationships and Building Trust around African collections’. All views expressed in the consultation were fed back to trustees.
The Horniman has now agreed a policy on restitution and repatriation, which states that each repatriation request will be dealt with on a case by case basis. It sets out a clear procedure for making a claim, including a commitment to sharing information and transparency of process.
